BALANCE

Sometimes in life we believe that we can not reach certain targets that seem important. Or just think that is hard to be sure what really matters, joy or balance, is it possible to have at the same time both?

Yesterday I went to the rowing training with my sister in low on the lake near their house. I knew that she started rowing not long ago. It looked peculiar to me but somehow going well with her even she is so tiny leady, not of strong sports air.

I was so glad that she invited me to join her on that rainy morning, though weather was less than promising to a first time visitor of Seattle willing to get as much as possible of real life in famous city, not only the beautiful images of new buildings on picturesque clouded sky and colors of green market….to learn something about people and her.

That morning’s small adventure brought up some old issues on how to live in balance with others. My no.1 suggestion would be rowing; everyone should learn to raw, starting whenever is possible.

Sitting on a motorboat by the coach and listening her recommendations, remarks, commands, I was caught up with some vise wonderful, so simple messages.

“Sit tall!”! “Do it nice and easy.” “Go strong but not kill yourself!”

“Everything is about timing”!

More the time was passing by, the crews were getting more smooth motions, very nice for watching, people so different succeeding in effort to fit in one, as if they are reproducing one ideal curve that is moving as a peaceful wave…Seeing eight people in each boat so eager to diminish all their differences in body shape, strength, age, and inevitable mental abilities and characters, it was amazing and possible to feel that directed energy to coordinate their individualities.

Team(s) balanced like one player, almost one body and mind with mission. Their sliding motion was sending joy, making that very rainy morning without trace of sun into a special moment, witnessing real life in balance. Take your chance to watch rowers entering the bout, legs in air slowly stepping …the water is so close, the boat is so tin, shaky.

This performance is leading me to the memories from my youth, to a young neighbor that was rowing, not playing football what was local sport of other boys from my street, he never just stand without special reason on the corner with others….From far away shadow he might be good looking, nice but not clever enough and not playing the right sport?

Many years later when our son has informed us that he will start rowing I was making jokes that only “strange” people would voluntarily rowe in galia-slave boat. Day after day I started realizing how rowing was good for him modeling his abilities and determination to get to the point.

We all vent away from the street of my youth, I have had not met my neighbor for years. I am little bit curious what became of him, maybe to try to find out if he had been the most balanced person of all of us in that times.

Another question was brought again watching scenes of that morning of the wet beauty on twinkling lake water: Prejudice-are they ruling our lives? Recently I have started to be aware more and more of my prejudices not only of others. Is there any connection with balance and prejudice? Rowing again take down several of them. You could feel great and at home anywhere with right people.
